Kayla Croner
Kayla is a resident in counseling, holding a BS degree in Psychology and a M.Ed in Counselor Education with a concentration in couples and family therapy. She has previously worked in a variety of mental health settings including school-based mental health, private practice, and a community services board. She is attentive to each client and strives to provide a safe and comforting environment that allows clients the opportunity to share. As a therapist, Kayla maintains a collaborative yet challenging approach, working alongside each client to support them throughout the change process. Her goal is to be empathic and understanding to allow clients space to heal and grow as individuals. In her free time, you can find Kayla on the football field with her nephews, cooking, playing with her dog, or spending time with family.
I worked with a client who had OCD and intrusive thoughts that were impacting her friendships and family. I worked alongside this client to help them makes sense of these thoughts and to identify them as just that, thoughts! Throughout our time together, the client was able to decrease the intensity and frequency of the intrusive thoughts, trust herself, and decrease compulsive behavior. It was amazing to see her go from someone who she couldn't speak highly of to someone who was smiling in session and telling me about how she let her intrusive thoughts pass on their own without engaging in them.
Clients can expect for their counseling process to be warm and inviting and a place to explore without judgment. My hope is to be collaborative with the client, encourage them to advocate for themselves, and present as their authentic selves.
I typically tell clients that the first session is the most formal that it will ever be with me. Those first one or two sessions consist of a lot of information gathering, but after that sessions are a lot less formal.
I think my own story has encouraged me to be a therapist. Like most, I too have trauma and parts of a sad story, and I wish I would have had a therapist like myself to help me navigate that. I have seen and heard a lot, and as people sometimes we just need someone to listen without judgment. I often say that life can be one of the hardest things that we have to do as humans, so as a therapist I just want to make it a little less difficult for someone.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
In session with me, clients can expect to receive what they came for. Clients will be given the free will to talk about whatever they need to for that session. I strive to be empathetic and validating while also challenging maladaptive behaviors for clients to grow and expand their perspective. It is my hope that clients will feel that they have been listened to and had autonomy within the session.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy and Compassion-focused Therapy.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
One of my biggest strengths is the ability to be personable. Clients have shared how easy it feels to talk to me. I can attest that to my ability to meet the client where they are. Another strength that I possess is my desire to see people do better. I enjoy working alongside the client in support as they navigate this thing called life.
