Alison Smoke is a dedicated social worker with over 17 years of experience providing therapeutic services to individuals across various stages of adulthood. She specializes in treating anxiety, depression, grief, and trauma, and incorporates a range of strength-based approaches in her work. These include Mindfulness practices, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and other evidence-based techniques. Alison believes in empowering individuals to explore their own solutions to everyday challenges, helping them live more wholehearted and fulfilling lives. She is deeply committed to creating a safe, supportive, and compassionate environment where clients can work toward their unique goals in therapy.
I worked with a client who was processing their childhood trauma as it pertains to their relationship with their parents. The client and I worked together to address this childhood trauma by showing self-compassion to the younger version of themselves. This enabled the client to feel unburdened from the deep guilt and shame they were placing upon their young shoulders and to address some of their deep-buried emotions.
The therapeutic process will be individualized to what works best for you. I will utilize different evidence-based practices to empower the client in achieving their established goals. My approach is client-centered and encourages the client to utilize the coping skills and methods that best resonate with them. I encourage clients to lean into their own intuition to address challenges as I firmly believe that people are experts on what works best for them. I can offer the tools to build the steering wheel, but Ibelieve you as the client can be empowered to steer your own ship.
I believe the first session is an important part of getting to know one another. Therapy is a relationship that builds over time, and I see the first session as an opportunity for you to get to know me and for me to get to know you. I often ask questions about any history of previous therapeutic interactions including what has worked well, as well as what hasn’t worked for you in the past. The first session is the foundation of developing trust between one another. The first session we can establish what goals you would like to work towards during our time together.
I am motivated to be a therapist and social worker because I believe we need community to best navigate life’s challenges. We cannot do it alone. I believe the therapeutic relationship is a unique one that enables me to bean impartial, compassionate, caring part of someone’s life. I am a therapist because I want to be a part of making life’s challenges a little easier to carry one conversation at a time.
