My name is Ashley Patrican. My ambition is reflected in my career as a Licensed Professional Counselor. My background shows my eagerness to seek experience and gain knowledge from people experiencing difficult circumstances and having them teach me what it means to become proficient in my field. While in Graduate school I became involved in an internship that allowed me the opportunity to work with clients in crisis at a residential facility. This is where I facilitated group therapy sessions as well as incorporate art therapy principles. I have been an avid supporter of the use of art in therapy since I first decided to become a counselor. I have worked as an In-Home counselor which allowed me the opportunity to to get an up close and personal look at my clients and at their livelihood. I later went into group private practice settings were I remained for many years harnessing my skill set with all age ranges.I am dedicated to treating the whole person and I believe in this field because it represents what I value, not only as a counselor but as a person as well. Giving back to the community and helping people heal is a worthwhile endeavor.
I once worked with a 7y/o hispanic female and her family to assist with her diagnosis of Autism and ADHD. The client was non-verbal and was perceived by the family as unable to make requests and or clothe herself. The break-through is that she started to clothe herself, make requests using PECS for food and listen to directions. During a session she was even able to speak for the first time.
Our sessions will be collaborative and mutually autonomous. Each session will reflect on progress and practice conducted by client outside of each session. My approach in talk therapy is to be goal oriented and direct as appropriate.
It involves an assessment about presenting symptoms, genogram of the family, family mental history and medical and mental health history. Then it is exploring briefly some areas of concern that may be of focus for treatment.
Making a difference in a person's life to be their best self is my ultimate motivator.
