After obtaining my Masters Degree from Texas A&M University - Kingsville, I worked in treatment settings including public mental health, inpatient and crisis services, private practice, and in the field providing services in homeless shelters, encampments, and in the community. I have worked with all populations but have spent the past three years working primarily with homeless and at-risk/high barrier Veterans. I use an eclectic approach to treatment and work collaboratively with clients to identify methods that meet their unique needs and tailor the process to their goals. I have a passion for working with couples and individuals experiencing relationship and interpersonal issues and I am currently working toward certification in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. My goal as a counselor is for my clients not to need me anymore so my focus with both individuals and couples is to give them the tools they need to be successful in healing themselves as well as education and guidance on how to use them. I look forward to helping you grow!
I worked with a client who was a homeless Veteran who did not believe that he deserved housing or help in any form. It took a while to earn his trust, but I was able to help him reclaim his potential and own his experiences in a way that allowed him to regain control of his life. After long term addiction and homelessness I am extremely proud to say that this client will be renewing his lease for a second year in his apartment, has been consistently receiving mental health care, and has been employed in a full-time position with benefits for over a year in a fulfilling job that allows him to give back to the communities and use his experiences to help others going through similar struggles as he had.
A solid therapeutic relationship is essential to success, so early sessions will focus heavily on building trust and rapport. For individuals I like to use initial sessions to learn about the goals and situation of the client and to answer questions. When working with couples I take a slightly more structured approach and follow the process of the Gottman Method. Initial sessions focus on assessment and identifying areas of strength. In both cases, treatment is tailored to the unique needs of the clients.
For both individuals and couples, the initial session will consist of reviewing necessary documents and policies as well as answering any questions clients may have. We will discuss presenting problems and goals but will focus minimally on treatment during this session.
I have had the privilege of seeing the impact of compassion and the power of hope in seemingly hopeless situations. Helping others see and meet their potential is extremely satisfying for me and I am thankful to have the ability to support myself in a career that is also so emotionally rewarding.
