Devon Burrell
I am a resident in counseling, holding a BA in Psychology and Sociology and a M.Ed in clinical mental health counseling both from the College of William and Mary. I have worked in a variety of mental health settings including school-based mental health, inpatient, and most recently community mental health. All of which have prepared me to work with a variety of acuity levels and to have a nuanced perspective on mental health. I strive to be open and empathetic with all clients and provide a safe environment for healing. In my free time I enjoy crocheting, binging Bob’s Burgers, and spending time with my family.
I worked with a young adult client who has long been in the role of the 'parentified child,' often feeling obligated to manage her mother’s emotions. They struggled with feelings of guilt around individuating and setting boundaries. During a recent session, she shared, "I thought about what we have talked about how I am more than just a landing space for my mom and I don't have to manage her emotions. I had to tell her, 'Mom, I love you, but I can't talk to you about this.' It was so freeing for me!"
Clients can expect for us to process through their challenges without judgment.I will challenge clients to push past their comfort zone, encourage them to advocate for themselves, and to live in line with their values to be their most authentic selves.
The first session with me will be primarily about getting to know you, what brings you to counseling, and other relevant mental and medical history. We will also cover informed consent, confidentially, and other policies/procedures. While this session is more formal it will still be conversational.
I have always been that person that others turn to and feel safe with. That coupled with my own innate passion to help others understand themselves and feel seen motivate me to show up everyday.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
Clients can expect to leave sessions feeling heard, validated, and supported. For me the therapeutic relationship is the most important healing tool and we work together to have that relationship flow naturally through honest and supportive communication.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Attachment-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) & Solution-Focused Therapy. I also do a lot of values and strengths-based work.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My biggest strength as a clinician is the authenticity, empathy, and nonjudgmental stance I bring into each session. I cannot ask of my clients something I wouldn't do myself, so I show up as my authentic self in the hopes that my clients will feel safe too as well.
