About Me

Dr. Clairissa Richardson is a research-informed practitioner holding an 8-year background diagnosing and treating psychological disorders. Well-versed in medical science, healthcare programs and treatment planning, Dr. Richardson studies the ontological conceptualizations pertinent to people with disabilities and the consequences of structural bias and discrimination. She utilizes critical and metacognitive approaches to teach her clients the depth of reductionist narratives, cycles of socialization, and the consequences of structural bias and discrimination, particularly as they apply to complex and diverse populations. Dr. Richardson is a devout Christian and social worker, dedicated to illuminating the benefit of spirituality based therapies and approaches in practice. She earned her doctorate degree in social work from Simmons University in Boston Massachusetts. In addition, Dr. Richardson holds a Bachelors and Masters degree in social work from The Florida State University in Tallahassee Florida. Dr. Richardson is a published author, dedicating to reducing the rigidity of mental health and disability as working concepts in rehabilitative care. Her recent work highlights the mental health gap for people with blindness or visual impairment from a rehabilitative lens. Dr. Richardson incorporates evidence based, culturally humble psychological modalities into practice with both adults and geriatric populations. She utilizes humanistic and existential approaches to optimize client-centeredness. While care is provided eclectically and in the best service to the client, modalities utilized include, but are not limited to, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), emotionally focused therapy (EFT), eye movement desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, interpersonal therapy (IPT), and solution focused therapy.

FAQs

While therapy is meant to be a collaborative and meaningful relationship, it is not intended to be dependent. I have found that many clients who adopt an independent, growth mindset are better positioned to be successful in therapy with me. The ultimate goal of therapy is for you to prosper and grow! Breakthroughs occur whenever my clients practice independent behavior, critically challenge their own beliefs in the context of suffering, and begin to appreciate and accept their negative experiences as part of their story.

It is important to remember that therapy is a process, one that requires effort on both practitioner and client. "Homework" is a term that I use to describe in vivo work. You can expect to be assigned "homework" that is tailored to your unique needs and not reflective of academic rigor or similar intensity. In addition, homework is optional, and thus please advise should you find it unhelpful or inappropriate. However, homework is always intended for the betterment of my clients.

You can expect the first phase of our primary session to be slightly more structured than subsequent sessions. This is due to the amount of critical information necessary to develop a diagnosis and associated treatment plan. The remainder of the primary session will involve dialogue surrounding those challenges/issues most important to you in which you would like support/treatment. You can expect my fair and open response relative to treatment expectations prior to exiting our primary session.

Developmental constructs denoting faith, spirituality, and religion all laid the foundation from which I aspire to practice. As a Christian, I believe in the life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. No one person is exempt from the love and acceptance of God. God calls us to pursue Him, thereby pursuing existential meaning. In practice, and with the permission of my clients, I expose existential theory to aid clients in finding spiritual meaning in their lives within the context of healing, recovery, and finding purpose.

Highlights

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Navigating through life can be difficult, and at times appear inconceivable. When the human condition propels us into the stressors of the world, it can feel like our lives are unraveling. While it is normal to experience intermittent levels of stress now and then, complicated stress can lead to dysfunction. It can create boundaries to growth and impact our relationships, occupations, and perspectives. Let’s not stay there. Together, we will reimagine what strength looks like. We will build on your attributes and intrinsic skills to create a safe space to explore what can be, what should be. I can help you find and nurture healthy perceptions of yourself so you may become complete, whole, and peaceful. My great passion is to bring healing to people who have been through a traumatic/stressful experience. Work with me will be challenging; however, the outcome will be transformational. My goal is for you to feel completely comfortably to be honest with your feelings and genuine to your experiences, regardless of my perceptions. Think of me as your confidant, guiding hand, and critical advisor.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize evidence-based therapies, including: Psychotherapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Existential Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy, Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Trauma-Focused Therapy & Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR)

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I specialize in trauma, including trauma-based concepts, theories, and clinical approaches. I am trained in eye movement desensitization reprocessing therapy (EMDR), which focuses on nervous system maladaptation. I understand the functional limitations that accompany PTSD and other related symptoms of trauma. If you seek relief from the pain of the past, I can help you heal. I utilize EMDR as a treatment modality with clients who suffer from emotional/behavioral issues stemming from identified, unresolved trauma. EMDR works by tapping into clients' unpleasant and disturbing memories through collaborative identification of sensory stimulation (sight, sound, hearing, etc) and rapidly processes the unpleasant portions of memories utilizing bilateral eye movement stimulation. EMDR can be understood to be a rapid, effective treatment for restructuring emotionally charged and frightening memories that serve to aid clients in finding relief, thereby improving relationships, sleep, emotional and behavioral issues, triggers, and flashbacks.
