Therapy is a place where people go to talk about uncomfortable things in an unfamiliar setting. No one wants to talk about uncomfortable things with someone they're not comfortable with. Therefore, my number one goal as a therapist is to develop a good therapeutic relationship. Rapport is the number one, most important factor when it comes to success in therapy. I am certified in trauma therapy. I have gained insight and experience doing trauma work, while also working with people who struggle with substance use disorders, co-occurring disorders, anxiety, depression, personality disorders, schizoaffective disorder, bi-polar, and have experience in many other areas, along the way. I also understand that there is so much more to someone, outside of their diagnosis. Sometimes, a lot of our struggles in life go much deeper than diagnosis. Our core beliefs and perceptions/expectations based off of our experiences, are central to our day-to-day lives'. Yet, sometimes, these aspects are overlooked. As a therapist, I come in with the mindset that I'm not always right. My goal is to work with people through an objective lense, while providing a healthy atmosphere that promotes real discussion with a positive outcome for each individual. Sometimes, that involves a trial-and-error process. There is always more to learn and improve on for everyone in this world. Including the therapist. I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere, in western Pennsylvania. I'm a "blue collar" guy, working in a field where, when people from back home find out what I do for a living, their jaws drop. However, I believe this allows me to bring a unique approach into the therapeutic environment.
I believe that as humans, we tend to overcomplicate things. That's because throughout each day, we think about different life events and/or decisions because of our perceptions, based off of different experiences we have had. However, just because we have experienced something a certain way, doesn't mean it will always play out that way. Once people are able to see that, while their sample size is real, sample sizes can grow and have significant influences on outcomes; this can be life-changing.
My clients can expect a calm, open, and objective environment, with a therapist who is down-to-earth, relatable, creative, and adaptable.
Rapport. Rapport. Rapport. Many times, people try therapy for a session or two, then get discouraged, and give up on therapy, because they feel that they are not making any progress with a therapist, or because they don't feel comfortable with their therapist. As a therapist, I am eager to get to work. Rapport is crucial to making progress in therapy. Therefore, my first session focuses on rapport. I want to get an idea of different problems, goals, and what can be done to provide the supportive, therapeutic environment that will best promote healing and change.
I grew up in a family where some of the most influential in my life were combat Veterans. After seeing how the trauma from combat impacted them, all I wanted to do was help. Then, after working in various different areas, I realized that working with people was something that I was actually good at.
