Hey, my name is Phil Caruso. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor that’s been in the field of psychotherapy for over 15 years. My journey helping others has brought me to a variety of settings that include partial programs, emergency rooms, and the homes of the clients I’ve served. My training experience is heavily rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) as well as Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and I project this through the lens of Humanistic Counseling. This means that I’ll help you identify negative thought patterns and better tolerate distress, all while ensuring I’m being genuine, supportive and never judgemental. Throughout our days - regardless of our responsibilities - we take time out to meet the needs of others. When you seek out counseling, you’re setting time aside to be able to reach your full potential.
Highlights
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
My approach is client-centered, goal-oriented, genuine and warm. However, because I’m goal-oriented, I won’t hesitate to challenge you once we’ve established a strong rapport. I take time explaining the reasoning behind the approaches I take and answer any questions or concerns my clients might have. This approach helps ensure my clients come away from each session with a better understanding of themselves and a sense of excitement for what the future holds.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I have experience with CBT and DBT as well as motivational interviewing, however I don’t believe in taking a one size fits all approach. Since no one is quite like you and I strive to be client-centered, I’ll make sure that I tailor my approach to best meet your needs. When appropriate, I often help my clients create a thought record so they can learn to better catch their negative thinking patterns and learn to challenge them. I integrate mindfulness/meditation strategies when appropriate and can integrate exposure therapy techniques to help clients overcome phobias.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My biggest strengths include helping clients overcome depression, anxiety, OCD, binge-eating disorder, issues with time management and procrastination, phobias and learning to more effectively adjust to challenging life circumstances. I’m fortunate enough to have a lot of experience helping teens and adults with developmental disabilities and this is also a passion of mine.

Typically, I employ an approach that centers around teaching you to build a greater awareness of what you tell yourself about the world around you as well as your own personal situation (self-talk) in order to help you learn to challenge your negative thinking. Together, we will identify goals and I’ll ensure that you’re steering the direction of the journey. I may have a lot of training and experience but you’re the expert on yourself.
After we’ve collected the important demographic and background info about what brings you to the session, I’ll explain my approach in greater detail and get to know you better so that we can take that first step in bringing you relief - together.
I’ve always been fascinated by the mind and how it can help us overcome immensely challenging situations on one hand, and get in the way of us achieving our goals on the other. Helping clients begin to see how much change is possible through small shifts in perspective is what drives me the most.
