Greetings! My name is Rhonda Mathis and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Professional Art Therapist with 14 yrs of experience working with adolescents and adults in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. I received my Bachelors from Kean University and my Masters from Caldwell University. I specialize in areas of depression, anxiety and trauma. I hope that you will come away with feeling validated, accepted and heard from our work together. I would love to work with you so that you can get on the road to healing and being the best you that you could possibly be. When I am not working I love to spend my free time making art, listening to music, going to concerts and taking my 2yr old dog Kobe to the dog park.
When you conduct cognitive behavioral therapy, you ask clients to examine their world differently, challenge their own thinking, and how that thinking leads them to the emotions they experience. I had a client who was a perfectionist. She had to be perfect in everything and would be furious with herself if she did something wrong. She prided herself in being just like her mother until she realized her perfect mother was the one who always criticized her as a child and made her feel as if she couldn't do anything right. Once she realized that her mother wasn't perfect, she was flawed but still a good person she was able to start forgiving herself for mistakes she's made and allowed herself grace.
I strive to create a safe, inclusive environment where all clients feel understood and valued. I'm here to listen and to guide you through the therapeutic process. I don't want you to feel like therapy is a chore. It may not always be fun but it will be a warm and welcoming experience.
A first session is typically a get to know you session. What your wants and needs are. What are your expectations and understanding of therapy are and what is it you expect of me as your therapist.
My goal and what motivates me is to empower, promote wellness, relieve suffering, and to restore mental health in a safe, nurturing environment.
