Hello, my name is Angela. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I love hearing people's stories. Since I was young I had an interest in behavioral health and helping others which led me to the counseling field. My background includes working with children, adolescents, adults, and couples. I have experience helping with anxiety, depression, ADHD, stress-management, life adjustments, grief and loss, as well as trauma and disordered eating behaviors. As a professional, I draw from my training and experiences to offer effective and meaningful care; and as a wife and mother, I draw from my personal experiences to connect and relate to my clients. My preferred methods used in therapy include a variety of techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Existential Therapy. When requested, I will also gladly incorporate faith in the process as I am a Catholic Christian.
Helping someone accept and believe that their trauma was not their fault- this was and is a crucial step in the healing and growth process.
Although every client is unique, some key points in the process that are universal would be: 1) developing an understanding for why the client is seeking counseling (e.g. what hurts, what isn't working, where does the client need help), 2) creating a set of goals and discussing methods for reaching them, and 3) listening for feedback from the client to see how the therapy process is affecting them and if there is need for adjustments in treatment
I begin with introductions and informed consent- explaining the nature of counseling and limits to confidentiality. This tends to help address most questions that clients come in with and opens up the floor for any other questions that may come up later on. I will often refer to the client's intake paperwork to go over why they are seeking counseling and what the goals are for therapy. At this point, I typically have an understanding of the broad story and will use any remaining time to ask questions or open the floor up to the client. I find that flexibility is a useful tool during the first few sessions.
I have found that a combination of continued learning and the practice of being a therapist- meeting clients and hearing their stories- keeps me motivated and encouraged as a professional.
