Hi! My name is Chandni Patel. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor in New Jersey. I received my Masters of Social Work from Rutgers University. My work with clients focuses on enhancing overall quality of life by recognizing their strength and resources. I believe my clients are experts of their own problems and they can also be experts to the solutions if they have appropriate support, interventions and tools. I have several years of experience working in an outpatient setting with adults with mental health and addiction disorders. I utilize evidence based practices to help my clients enhance autonomy in their life by addressing symptoms of mental health and addiction. I strive to enhance a place of safety, empowerment and comfortability to build the foundation to effective therapeutic sessions and progress towards individualized treatment goals.
I worked with a client for over 2 years who struggled with substance use and anxiety. Through our CBT sessions and some DBT tools, she was able to identify her patterns with people pleasing and engaging in defense mechanisms that contributed to codependency and anxiety related to external factors she couldn’t control. Once she learned to practice mindfulness and express emotions in a healthier way, she was able to break patterns with relapses with substance use and unhealthy relationships that continued to impact her mental health symptoms.
Counseling process starts with building rapport with my clients before we collaborate on identifying areas of their life that they want to work on. Sessions are collaborative and clients will leave with coping skills to implement in between sessions. The collaborative approach focuses on the clients’ ability to trust the process and open themselves up to discovering their full potential in their life.
The first session will focus on information gathering where the client can share what brings them to therapy as well as collaborate in a treatment plan and discuss the expectations of therapy including confidentiality and the counseling process.
While working as an EMT earlier in my career, I learned that many physical diseases are often symptoms of mental health that many people are afraid to talk about whether that’s due to cultural or familial stigma which is often due to lack of knowledge about mental health. I strive to break the stigma against seeking therapy and addressing mental health needs. I am passionate about providing individuals and families a safe, non judgemental space where they can process their current struggles and learn healthier coping mechanisms to enhance their strengths.
Highlights
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
You can expect to address your current stressors that led to seeking these therapeutic sessions and explore reasons for continued patterns that may be recurring. Taking the first step in looking for help takes strength and stepping into the space of therapy can be frightening, but there is comfort in knowing that you don’t have to go through this alone and you are worthy of feeling seen and heard.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including: Psychotherapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Attachment-Based Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT, Mindfulness Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy & Narrative Therapy.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My biggest strength is my ability to utilize active listening, empathy and interpersonal approach where I work with my clients to meet them where they are at in the present moment and create a holding environment to safely process what hinders their goals and progress in where they want to be in their life. I utilize a collaborative approach that strengthens therapeutic relationships and empowers clients to guide their progress.
