Hey there! I’m Gabby Oblena. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia and a National Certified Counselor. Do you feel overwhelmed with everything? Are you confused and lost on what to do? Do you feel stuck, like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel? Imagine creating your own light to help you get out of the darkness and get to where you want to be. The weight of the world is heavy right now, but that does not mean you have to carry it alone. I have experience working in multiple settings and environments—community based mental health, mental health advocacy, outpatient therapy, college campus disability services, and schools and youth centers. I have a history of working with individuals of all ages. I enjoy working with those navigating depression, anxiety, stress, cultural identity, sexual and gender identity, and general life adjustments.
I have worked with a teenage client who had never been to therapy before. She resided in a low-income area, growing up around significant crime and violence, including the murder of her brother and abuse from her mother. She struggled with emotional dysregulation and talking about her feelings in general, but after months of getting to know her and allowing her a safe space, she finally had the courage to open up to me and cried for the first time in years.
Clients can generally expect simple talk therapy with me where I am there to help you feel safe and secure in being heard and being seen. I will challenge those thoughts and patterns that no longer serve you that, quite frankly, can sometimes be mean to your own brain. We’ll talk through those thoughts, identify them, figure out where they came from, and find a way to make the changes we need to change to get to where you want.
First sessions with me will include general information gathering and psychoeducation on what therapy will look like with me and what you would like to get out of working with me. However, the first session and subsequent initial sessions will involve me getting to know you better and an opportunity for you to get to know me better and ask questions. We are a team—let’s get a chance to know each other.
I’m a therapist because I want to be the person my younger self needed. Life is complex and difficult and messy and scary. I want to help individuals to function the best that they can within the context of their own life and bring out the potential within them that they did not think possible.
Highlights
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
If you allow me the opportunity to work with you, what I hope you can benefit from me is the power to become comfortable with vulnerability, realize your potential for life-long resiliency, create better relationships with yourself and others, and process any tangled mess you need help untangling. I use person-centered techniques. You are the captain of this ship and I am your guide—I will meet you where you are at and we can work together with your goals in mind to get the outcome that you want for yourself.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
As an LPC, I use evidence-based, person-centered, holistic approaches to psychotherapy. I’m not here to judge, nor am I here to tell you what to do. I implement many treatment methods such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, acceptance and commitment therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, trauma-focused therapy, motivational interviewing, and more. However, at the end of the day the best treatment method and tools will ultimately be catered to you and your treatment goals; I work with you to figure out what is best for you.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
While I have worked with various ages, populations, and disorders, my strengths lie mostly in individuals struggling with mood disorders, social anxiety, identity issues, and self-esteem issues. My biggest strength is my ability to actively listen and empathize.
