About Me

Hello! My name is Matt Verlander. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 15 years of experience helping others find healing. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology from Gardner-Webb University, and my Master of Social Work degree from Radford University. I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings during the course of my career including adult and adolescent outpatient clinic, school-based, community mental health, and foster care. As a compassionate therapist with extensive experience working with both children and adults, the focus of my work has always been to connect with the person or group with whom I am sitting, help them to feel safe and welcome and then walk with them toward healing and growth. I combine my easy-going personality and genuine care for people with a person-centered and strengths-based approach to help folks navigate their journey. Maybe in your journey you've been hurt in a relationship or find yourself navigating a challenging life event or transition. At the heart of my practice is the belief that healing happens in authentic and healthy relationships. Whether you are seeking help for yourself or your child, my goal is to guide you toward a place of connection, understanding, and healing. Lets work together to rebuild trust, enhance communication, and nurture the relationships that matter most in your life.

FAQs

I previously had the opportunity to work with a teen client who struggled with social anxiety and deep rooted self-esteem issues. Working together, the client was able to develop practical tools and coping skills to give them the confidence needed to perform in school and in extra curricular activities. We worked together with their parents to see this success as I believe a healthy family support system is vital to a teenager's success.

The counseling process is individualized and is paced by the client. Healing happens in relationship and relationship is not designed to be rigid or rushed. Whether you are seeking counseling for yourself for your child, I will take the time to get to know you and/or your child and we will lean on your innate strengths during our work together.

The initial session is a "get to know you" time. This goes for myself and you, the client. We will meet each other and use the time to build the foundations of our therapeutic relationships, from which we can progress toward your goals.

Even back to my high school days, others have felt comfortable sharing with me. My perspective on this quality has evolved to one of gratitude. I do not take it lightly and also take great care to be present in each moment with each person both professionally and in my personal life. I am motivated to be a helper by my care for people. Everyone has been created for a purpose and I enjoy guiding others toward theirs'.

Highlights

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

My approach to therapy is eclectic. Each session is tailored to the needs of the client and I will blend components from different approaches help address those needs. My style is very casual and relaxed in order to have the opportunity to gain your trust and confidence in the therapeutic relationship. I also provide skill based treatment to focus on changing problematic thoughts, feelings and behaviors using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I believe that by changing unhelpful or negative thoughts, people can change how they feel which can positively change how they behave.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Attachment-Based Therapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and Solution-Focused Therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

Healing from trauma is a cornerstone of my practice. I am passionate about guiding individuals through their healing journey with sensitivity and care. By addressing past wounds or recent hurts, I empower clients to rebuild trust in themselves and others, reclaiming their sense of safety and belonging. Whether you are seeking to heal childhood trauma, navigate relational challenges, or strengthen your emotional regulation, I offer a safe space for exploration and transformation. I enjoy working closely with clients to help them learn what makes them unique. Truly knowing ourselves (the good, the bad, and the ugly) can be transformational as we allow those we are in relationship with know us deeper.
