A breakthrough I've helped a client achieve that was particularly significant to me was when I helped a client realize that the way they lived their life affected the mental health of their children more than they realized. If someone does not promote stability and consistency in their own life, it can actually enable their children to have the same difficulties in life that the client themselves had in their own difficult upbringing.
Client's can expect a more casual session than most. While the sessions have structure, they aren't as formal as most therapists. I want them to feel like they are having a conversation, where they can feel understood, but also challenged. We will occasionally be interactive, maybe doing activities together like adult coloring, therapist aid worksheets, or board games.
My first session is a bit more formal than most of the sessions, as I make sure to cover the confidentiality and introduction to therapy speech. Furthermore, I also cover practice policies and any policies that I, myself have.
I am motivated to be a therapist because I want to help people unlock the potential that has been inside them all along to accomplish their wildest dreams. Most people have general ideas and concepts of how they want their life to be, but believe that they are forever destined to be hindered by roadblocks. In reality, sometimes it's bouncing their ideas off of a soundboard to truly understand their life circumstances and have a breakthrough on how to break away from their typical patterns, ultimately also helping their relationships.
