I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, a Nationally Certified Counselor, and a Certified Trauma Professional. I have a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Montclair State University. I have experience in working in an in-patient facility, community mental health, and private practice, and experience in volunteering with Veteran Affairs. I am passionate in working with veterans, teens, adults, and adults over 65 years old. I have experience working with individuals who are struggling with PTSD, grief and loss, substance abuse, stress management, anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, health issues, and maternal mental health/post-partum depression.
A client's breakthrough that was significant to me was earning this client's trust after almost two years in therapy that this client opened up about their childhood sexual abuse that they had been holding onto. Once this client began addressing the trauma, this client began to make strides in overcoming her anxiety and has learned to have healthy relationships with people, and this client is learning how to set healthy boundaries. This client stated, "I went from hiding from the world to enjoying my life." That is a compliment I will cherish.
Clients can expect a relaxed atmosphere in which I meet you where you are at. I am here to listen to you, validate your experience and feelings, provide insight regarding your experience, and offer up a different outlook on life. I focus on building rapport with my clients before incorporating therapeutic strategies and setting goals. And most importantly, I am here to help you feel less alone. And if you want to share pictures of your pets, I will gladly see all the pictures.
I always make a joke with my clients that the first initial session can sometimes feel like an interrogation because of all the questions I ask, but I promise it is not an interrogation, I am just excited to see and get to know you. During the first session, I will share some personal information about myself to help the client see me more as a person and not just an expert. This has helped reduce anxiety around the first session.
I have always wanted to help people, and mental health has been an overlooked area for so long. The ability to help my client's help themself is so rewarding.
Highlights
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
During our sessions, clients can expect to take away psycho-education; whether that is education regarding their diagnosis, trauma, and/or how the brain plays a role in their trauma, addiction, diagnosis, etc. Clients can also expect to take away healthy coping skills, a better understanding of how they came to this point, and most importantly clients can take away the idea that they are more than the horrible events that have happened to them; that their identity is not fully wrapped up in their trauma, illness, diagnosis, or sport that they play.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychoeducation, Solution-Focused Therapy & Trauma-Focused Therapy.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My biggest strength as a therapist is my ability to connect with client's and meet them where they are at. I believe that providing psycho-education is not only an important aspect of the therapeutic process, but I truly believe that it is a strength of mine as a clinician. And most importantly, I believe my ability to take on a multicultural perspective is one of my biggest strengths,I believe it is important to understand not only where my client's are coming from mentally, but to understand where they come from culturally.
