What Is a Step Down Program for Mental Health?
You’ve been successfully discharged from Jefferson Health, The Recovery Village Cherry Hill at Cooper, or Oasis Mental Health Centers. The time you spent in inpatient treatment was invaluable, but you’re finding the transition back to normal life difficult. Step-down therapy programs could be a good choice for you.
The “continuum of care” outlines treatment options from most intensive (inpatient) to least intensive (outpatient), with intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) being a good middle step. During outpatient care, you’ll still meet with a therapist and psychiatrist at least once a week. With an IOP, this can increase to 9-15 hours a week. Your team of therapists and psychiatrists will help you maintain your healing, reach your goals, and manage renewed triggers. Lifebulb offers traditional outpatient therapy and psychiatry for individuals who are stepping down from local IOPs or inpatient care.
It’s hard to quit anything cold turkey. Quitting therapy and medication management can be outright harmful for you. Going from a structured inpatient setting to your normal life without any transitional services can result in a resurgence of symptoms, relapse, and increased risk of mental illness. By continuing therapy and medication management, you increase the chance that the improvements you saw during inpatient will stick. Lifebulb’s Cherry Hill therapists and psychiatrists can provide this off-ramp into your healthier, happier future.

Mental health issues have triggers. For example, a long-term relationship ended, you lost your job, or you were reminded of a past trauma. These triggers could happen again, and a Cherry Hill therapist can help you handle those triggers as they come up naturally in your life. By working through active triggers, you build resilience and the skills you need to thrive in the long term.

What healthy habits did you pick up when you were at Oasis Mental Health Center or Jefferson Health? How do you plan on keeping up with those habits? Transitions are hard no matter how positive a transition it was. Habits are often one of the first collaterals of a big transition, like moving out of inpatient care. Outpatient therapy and psychiatry help reinforce the routines, boundaries, and habits that you developed. Like a muscle, repeated practice of these skills will strengthen them and your mental health.
