About Alyson Ingram

Hi, I am Alyson and have worked with children in clinical and school settings for over 23 years. I have also done consultative and crisis work with educators and have collaborated with mental health providers within the surrounding community. I have a B.S. in Psychology from Virginia Tech and a M.A. in Counseling from West Virginia University. I am originally from Charleston, WV and have lived in Charlottesville, VA for over ten years. I have two children, am an avid runner, and love to garden, cook and spend time with friends and family.

FAQs

I was working with a client who had selective mutism, a severe anxiety disorder where a person cannot speak in specific social situations, such as school, despite being able to speak comfortably in other settings like home. He hadn't been able to talk to adults and was limited in talking with peers for multiple years. I used behavioral theory approaches to gradually expose him to social scenarios that challenged him both with peers his own age, and with slow integration of adults into these social scenarios. Over a period of many months, his anxiety to talk to his peers lessened greatly, and he was also able to talk to adults as well. Currently, he has maintained this progress.

The initial session will be spent getting to know the client, seeing if there is a connection, exploring the client's goals for therapy, and envisioning what progress looks like. Continuing sessions will be spent learning about what contributes to the problem, and then collaborating with the client to take steps toward accomplishing the goals which are most important to the person.

The initial session involves creating a warm, compassionate space for the client to communicate what brings the person to therapy, and also involves exploring the client's background to be able to appropriately assess the factors preventing the person from achieving progress in their lives.

Change is often an evolutionary and revolutionary process. Growth can be challenging, and it breaks through barriers. It is fulfilling for me as a counselor to help clients envision positive change, and then encourage the client to walk through the growth process, as a collaborator, no matter how much courage it may take.

As a Resident in Counseling, as a school counselor, and as a person I have been a “good listener”, and someone who is compassionate, intuitive and sensitive. I remain curious about people, and their lives. In the therapeutic space, I am motivated to help people overcome adversity, and truly love to witness clients' inner determination and resilience to accomplish personal goals despite challenges and barriers. I am a humanitarian at my core, and it truly makes me happy to be able to facilitate positive change in the lives of others.
