About Regina Hughes
I’m Gina Hughes, a Virginia Resident in Counseling and National Certified Counselor. I earned my master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from William & Mary, with a focus on Military and Veterans Counseling. I support clients navigating anxiety, relationship concerns, grief, and life transitions, with particular interest in how experiences of connection, loss, and belonging shape emotional well-being. My approach is person-centered, attachment-focused, and trauma-informed. I strive to create a therapeutic relationship in which clients feel understood and comfortable exploring experiences they may have struggled to express elsewhere. I value understanding each person within the context of their identity, relationships, and life circumstances, and I am committed to providing affirming care for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, neurodivergent individuals, and military families.
FAQs
A particularly meaningful moment involved a client navigating a life transition. Through our work, the client developed a clearer understanding of their challenges and began to acknowledge emotions that had been difficult to access. This was significant to me because the client gained insight and a stronger connection to their emotional experience, helping them recognize their resilience and feel more capable of moving forward.
Counseling with me is a collaborative process shaped by your concerns, goals, and personal values. We begin by exploring what brings you to therapy, what you have already tried, and what you hope will change.
As our work develops, we will explore connections between your experiences, emotions, and recurring patterns. Sessions create space to process difficult feelings and develop practical ways to respond to challenges. Together, we will regularly reflect on what is helping and adjust our approach so that therapy remains relevant to your needs and the changes you hope to make.
The first session focuses on getting to know you and understanding what brings you to counseling. We discuss your current concerns, relevant history, sources of support, and hopes for our work together. I also explain confidentiality and its limits, answer questions, and discuss what you can expect from therapy.
This first meeting helps us identify an initial direction for our work and begin building a therapeutic relationship. It is also an opportunity for you to get a sense of my approach and discuss whether it feels like a good fit for your needs. I welcome your questions and feedback, both in our first session and throughout our work together.
I am motivated by the opportunity to help people feel less alone in experiences they may have struggled to understand or express. I value providing a space where clients can explore pain, uncertainty, and conflicting feelings without needing to minimize them or have everything figured out.
I find meaning in helping clients develop a fuller understanding of themselves, give attention to needs that have gone unrecognized, and build more satisfying ways of relating to themselves and others. Supporting that process with care, curiosity, and respect is what draws me to this work.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
My hope is that you leave sessions feeling heard and understood, with greater clarity about your emotions, needs, and relationship patterns. Together, we will explore what feels difficult, build on your existing strengths, and develop practical ways to navigate challenges. This may include understanding recurring feelings of self-doubt, recognizing the strain of prioritizing others’ needs, or making sense of distress following conflict, loss, or change. Our work can help you communicate your needs, establish boundaries, and respond to yourself with greater compassion. We will move at a pace that respects your readiness, with goals shaped by what meaningful growth looks like in your life.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My strengths lie in helping clients explore how their experiences have shaped their sense of self, emotional responses, and relationships. I help clients recognize how past experiences influence their lives today, make sense of recurring struggles, and clarify their needs and values. I make room for both reflection and emotional processing. Understanding why something hurts can be valuable, and so can having the support to acknowledge sadness, anger, grief, or longing that has been difficult to express. I help clients approach these feelings at a manageable pace and draw on that understanding to move forward in ways that honor their needs, values, and goals.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Attachment-Based Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Couples Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Gottman Method, Person-Centered Therapy, Psychodynamic, and Strength-Based Therapy.
