About Hillary Smith

I have worked in the mental health field for over twelve years, supporting clients from diverse backgrounds and helping individuals navigate a wide range of life challenges. My approach is rooted in compassion, collaboration, and creating a safe space where clients feel heard, understood, and empowered in their healing journey. I provide EMDR therapy and integrate evidence-based approaches that incorporate self-compassion, mindfulness, and behavioral skills to help clients develop greater insight, build resilience, and create meaningful change. I believe healing involves understanding the experiences that have shaped us while also learning practical tools to support growth, emotional regulation, and a stronger connection with ourselves.

FAQs

One breakthrough that has been especially meaningful to me is helping clients move beyond simply challenging negative thoughts and instead understand the deeper experiences that shaped them. Together, we've explored the roots of beliefs such as low self-worth, shame, or feelings of not being enough, often tracing them back to earlier life experiences. As clients develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion, they're able to replace these long-held patterns with healthier, more balanced ways of seeing themselves. Witnessing someone begin to recognize their inherent worth and approach themselves with kindness is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

Clients can expect a supportive, collaborative, and compassionate space where they feel heard and understood. I like to provide enough structure to help guide the therapeutic process while also allowing flexibility for clients to bring forward whatever feels most important in each session. My approach is tailored to each individual, blending insight with practical strategies. As needed, I teach evidence-based behavioral skills and work with clients to identify the tools, techniques, and perspectives that will be most meaningful and effective for their unique goals and experiences. My hope is that each session leaves clients feeling more understood, empowered, and equipped to navigate life's challenges.

The first session is primarily an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin building a foundation for our work together. While there is some initial paperwork and intake information to review, my main focus is understanding what brought you to therapy, the challenges you're experiencing, and what you hope to gain from the process. We'll explore your current symptoms, relevant history, strengths, and goals so that we can create a personalized treatment plan that best supports your healing and growth. My goal is for you to leave the first session feeling heard, understood, and with a clearer sense of how we'll work together moving forward.

What motivates me most as a therapist is the opportunity to walk alongside people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. I believe everyone deserves to feel heard, understood, and accepted, especially when they're carrying pain that may have gone unseen for a long time. It's incredibly meaningful to witness clients gain insight, rediscover their strengths, and begin to feel more like their authentic selves. Watching someone move from simply surviving to truly thriving is what continues to inspire and motivate me in this work.

Highlights

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Clients can expect to leave sessions with greater insight into themselves, a deeper understanding of their experiences, and practical tools they can apply in their everyday lives. I value helping clients not only explore the challenges they are facing but also develop skills and strategies that support meaningful change outside of the therapy room. My hope is that each session provides clients with something they can carry forward whether that is a new perspective, a helpful coping skill, increased self-awareness, or a greater sense of confidence in navigating life's challenges.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Psychotherapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), EMDR, Mindfulness Therapy, Self Compassion Focused Therapy & Trauma-Focused Therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

One of my greatest strengths as a therapist is creating a compassionate, supportive space where you feel safe to be heard, understood, and accepted. I believe healing begins when people feel genuinely seen, and I strive to foster an
environment where you can explore your experiences without judgment. Together, we'll gain meaningful insight, build
practical tools for lasting change, and work toward greater resilience, healing, and connection with yourself.
