I recently helped a young woman improve her relationships with herself and others by identifying her boundaries around acceptable behavior from others, clearly communicating those boundaries. While it was difficult for her, at first, to handle the disappointment this caused in some of her relationships, she generally found that most people understood, respected her wishes, and she felt better because she was being treated in ways that felt more positive.
I enjoy sessions that feel like a friendly chat with advise and poignant questions sprinkled in, such that people end their sessions with a few take away thoughts or action items to be readdressed or followed upon in our next session.
Initially I like to gather background information on mental health history and current lifestyle and events, outline goals for treatment, identify strengths, and begin to develop a plan for treatment.
