About Madison Peterson

Hi! I'm Madison, a Licensed Social Worker who works with individuals across the lifespan, with a particular focus on adolescents and young adults. My approach to therapy is client-centered, meaning I believe therapy should be collaborative and tailored to each individual’s unique experiences and goals. I incorporate evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help clients better understand the connection between their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while developing practical coping skills. I also have experience working with high-acuity clients, including individuals struggling with self-harm, anxiety, depression, and intense emotional distress.

FAQs

One breakthrough that stands out to me was working with a teen in a partial hospitalization program who was struggling with intense school avoidance and urges to self-harm. At the start, returning to school felt completely overwhelming for them. Through DBT skills work, building their confidence over time, and including their family in sessions to increase support and understanding, we were able to create a plan that felt manageable. Eventually, they were able to return to school with tools to cope with distress and navigate urges in healthier ways.

You can expect therapy with me to feel supportive, collaborative, and genuine. I value creativity and flexibility in the process. Therapy doesn’t have to look the same for everyone. Some days that might mean practicing coping skills, while other days might involve slowing down and reflecting on patterns or experiences. When it feels helpful, I enjoy incorporating grounding exercises, mindfulness, movement, or even stepping outside for some fresh air. Therapy doesn’t always have to happen sitting perfectly still in a chair. My goal is to help you build tools and confidence so you can navigate life’s challenges.

In the first session, my main focus is simply getting to know you. I believe building trust and rapport is one of the most important parts of therapy, so there’s no pressure to share everything all at once. We’ll talk about what’s bringing you to therapy, what your goals might be, and any questions you have about the process. I know it can take time to feel comfortable opening up to someone new, and that’s completely okay.

What motivates me most as a therapist is being able to support people during times in their lives when things feel really heavy or uncertain. I love helping clients better understand themselves, build coping skills, and realize they’re more capable than they may believe. Seeing someone gain confidence and start navigating challenges in ways that once felt impossible is one of the most rewarding parts of this work.
