About Michelle Williams

Michelle has an extensive background in both mental health and addictions counseling, with several years of experience working in outpatient and inpatient treatment settings. Her treatment approach is client-centered, with a strong emphasis on acceptance and support to help individuals reach their full potential. Michelle frequently utilizes cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help clients identify and change thought patterns and behaviors that impact mood and emotions, supporting positive and meaningful outcomes in therapy. She works with individuals struggling with addictions, co-occurring disorders, anxiety, low self-esteem and confidence, and codependency, and helps clients develop healthy coping skills, emotional regulation strategies, and a stronger sense of self-worth.

FAQs

I had a client that struggled with body image issues and some tendencies toward eating disorder behaviors. We were able to determine, after many weeks of counseling, that these issues seemed to stem from things that were said to her as a child. Once the client understood that she was no longer in that situation, she was able to start working on making healthy meal choices and positive body image.

The counseling process usually proceeds by developing the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist in order to develop trust and a feeling that they are in a safe space. As a client talks about their story, it can become evident immediately what needs to be worked on or it may take some time to process feelings and emotions in order to develop a course of treatment. Clients will be asked what goals they want to work on and we will work together to develop an appropriate course of treatment.

I like to start the session by asking clients to tell me a little bit about themselves, general information, such as work, family, relationships, etc. so that we can both start to feel comfortable with each other. I will generally ask client to describe their problems and symptoms in order to get an idea what is going on and in what areas they need help. During the first session, I also usually ask the client what made them decide to engage in therapy and what goals do they hope to accomplish and/or what would they like to work on.

I wanted to be a therapist since my first psychology class in high school. I have great empathy for the struggles that someone may be going through in life and enjoy helping people to see that they DO have the power and ability to change.

Highlights

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Clients can expect to have a therapeutic relationship with me in which they learn to feel confident and empowered to make important, positive changes in their life. I feel that the relationship between client and therapist is one of the most important aspects of treatment and will do my best to ensure that you feel comfortable, supported, and encouraged. I will work with you to help you learn that, yes, you can learn to change the way you think and if you can change the way you think, you can change the way you feel!

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Psychotherapy, Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Therapy, Motivational Interviewing & Solution-Focused Therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I feel that my biggest strength is in developing the therapeutic relationship between myself and my client. The therapeutic relationship begins by developing a rapport with my client and building from that stepping stone. Another area of strength is the empathy I feel for the problems that clients struggle with, regardless of whether or not this is an issue that I might have encountered in my lifetime. I feel that I am able to meet with clients where they are at, rather than trying to force them to do something they are not yet ready to do.
