About Nyah August

Nyah spent 17 years living across Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. These experiences sparked her curiosity, openness, and love for cultural diversity. Returning to the U.S., she earned dual undergraduate degrees in English Education and Agricultural Sciences from Virginia Tech and a Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from William & Mary. She has supported university students and international clients, survivors of trauma, and individuals navigating substance use recovery. In every setting, Nyah creates a space where clients feel truly seen, understood, and empowered to recognize their strengths and capacity for growth. Grounded in positive psychology, a strengths-based approach, and a growth mindset, she helps motivated individuals cultivate sustainable habits, align choices with one's core values, and develop new ways of thinking that support growth.

FAQs

One of my clients had long carried a harsh inner critic. Together, we explored self-compassion and reframing, and gradually, I witnessed a shift. They began to see that their critical voice wasn’t the truth of who they are, nor their destiny. The moment they could look at themselves with curiosity and kindness was a breakthrough. They started responding to themselves with understanding instead of judgment, creating space to grow, heal, and embrace their own potential. Witnessing that transformation and seeing them meet themselves with compassion was deeply moving.

I believe you are the expert of your own life. My role is to guide, ask the right questions, and shine alight on what’s already inside you. Together, we create a space to build self-awareness, by the widening gap between an emotion and your response, where reflection replaces impulse. In that space, you can step back, notice patterns, and choose responses that truly reflect who you want to be. We focus on what matters to you, by aligning your actions with your values, uncovering your strengths, and creating a life that feels authentic. Change comes from noticing, understanding, and then choosing differently.

In our first session, my goal is to get to know you. I’ll aim to understand the big picture (e.g your history, relationships, goals, etc.) and may ask follow-up questions to help connect the dots. I like to think of it like outlining the edges of a puzzle, setting the frame so that in future sessions, we can fill in the rest together. I may ask a variety of questions early on, as they help us see patterns and connections that guide our work. At the same time, I honor the need to process emotions in the moment, giving space for what needs to be expressed so we can pivot when necessary. This time is yours. Your well-being is the priority, and my role is to support you in a way that feels meaningful.

I am motivated to be a therapist because I believe everyone deserves to live in a reality where they feel supported, seen, and valued unconditionally. That kind of connection is profoundly healing. Even if money or circumstance were no object, I would still choose this work. Being a therapist is truly my dream job. I love listening deeply and experiencing the world through someone else’s eyes. I find joy in using my intuition to ask thoughtful questions, help uncover blind spots, and use creative imagery and metaphors to encourage reflection. Therapy is, in many ways, a sophisticated form of improv, and I cherish being fully present in each moment.

Nyah August, Resident in Counseling, is under the clinical supervision of Ebony Harrison, LPC-S, 2340 Commonwealth Drive, Ste 0101, Charlottesville, VA 22901, 434-214-6556, while obtaining supervised post-master’s degree experience per the laws and regulations governing the practice of Counseling.

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I help clients build habits that support mental health and create lasting change. Real transformation happens when these practices become part of daily life, shaping both what we do and how we think. When our actions reflect our values, they strengthen self-esteem, guiding the opportunities we pursue and the relationships we nurture. I work with clients to develop a growth-focused mindset through thought reframing, turning challenges into chances to learn, adapt, and grow. My approach emphasizes authentic happiness, in feeling fulfilled by living in alignment with your values rather than chasing short-term dopamine highs, which often provide temporary pleasure but leave us feeling unfulfilled. I also draw on neuro-plasticity, helping clients see that the brain can change, empowering them to develop new skills, adopt healthy habits, and realize their potential for growth.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Positive Psychology, Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy & Strength-Based Approach.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.li

I relate deeply to anyone who has ever felt “different,” and I love helping clients see that as a source of strength. Growing up in multiple countries across Europe gave me a deep appreciation for diversity and taught me to embrace differences with curiosity, love, and humility. My top strength, according to Clifton Strengths, is Developer, reflecting my natural tendency to see potential in others and support their growth, often creating a self-fulfilling prophecy as clients rise to meet that belief. I also scored highly in Empathy, which allows me to deeply connect with clients, and Learner, reflecting my commitment to life-long learning in this profession.
