FAQs
The ones that stand out to me the most are when clients finally feel empowered enough to use what we have discussed to make the hard changes in their lives. In one specific instance, a young adult client of mine felt trapped in an abusive environment. This person had already taken so many practical steps towards leaving but hadn't felt ready for those final steps. Through working with myself and the rest of their clinical team (despite people at home discouraging them seeking treatment), this client made and executed a plan to safely leave and move to a more supportive environment.
I approach every session with the goal of offering my client grace and understanding while also still showing them the respect of being honest about what patterns I am seeing. None of us can grow without both feeling safe and challenged. My challenging of you will always be tempered with compassion and unconditional positive regard, as well as humor when I can bring it in. I also welcome challenging from my clients, as I want to know if something I am doing or something I have said isn't working, or has upset you in some way.
I prioritize first building rapport with my clients and getting to better understand their experiences, values, and ways of understanding the world. I also want to make sure clients know what to expect out of the therapeutic process and relationship. Our first session will involve discussions of consent, healthy boundaries, and my role as a therapist as well as a lot of questions to get to know you, your history, and your therapy goals.
I love people (despite being a bit shy outside of my professional role). I have consistently gravitated towards the helper role from a young age, often being the one my friends came to for comfort or advice. Combine that with my own lived experiences with mental health struggles, and I felt a conviction to learn how to be more effective in helping others care for their mental health. I know change is possible, no matter how scary, and I want others to know that too.
Highlights
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
Therapy is a collaborative process in which the therapeutic relationship forms for the foundation for everything. I know it can be incredibly difficult to not only ask for the help in the first place, but to continually have to bare the most vulnerable parts of yourself to someone and then come back and face them the next session. This process doesn't work unless you feel safe enough to be truly honest with me. I work hard to honor that and facilitate that environment. From there, I strive to help you build insight into your own emotions, bodily responses, and behaviors so that you can better apply the skills we will be exploring together. I often will provide homework for clients to do between sessions to maximize progress. (Don't stress about it too much- nothing is for a grade, and I focus on what works for you, not forcing you to do complete things that don't benefit you).
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Client-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Emotionally Focused Therapy, Mindfulness Therapy & Solution-Focused Therapy.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My biggest strength as a therapist is that I genuinely love to hear people's stories. I provide a warm, non-judgemental environment with a focus on truly trying to understand your situation as you see it. I have been through my own therapy and can empathize with how difficult the process can feel. I work to bring both my professional experience and training as well as my own lived experiences in to best empathize and support my clients while maintaining healthy therapeutic boundaries.
