About Allison Sweeten

Hi! I'm Allie. In 2020, I decided to make a massive career shift into mental health counseling so that I could turn my biggest passion into my career. Since then, I graduated from St. Bonaventure University with an MSEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I have experience working with a wide range of mental health challenges, but I specialize in treating depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, OCD, trauma, and substance use, with an emphasis on LGBTQIA affirming care. I also have extensive experience working with high risk populations and am skilled at helping clients navigate and manage suicidal ideation and self-harm urges. I utilize Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to provide you with practical coping strategies that you can implement day to day. Whether you’re feeling stuck, lost, overwhelmed, or alone, I would be honored to walk alongside you on your therapeutic journey.

FAQs

I recently helped a client process through childhood trauma that they had been carrying alone for over 40 years. We worked together to compassionately speak to the younger version of themselves and provide them with the comfort, support, and safety that they deserved. It was difficult work, and seeing this client's willingness to sit with discomfort and process their emotions without judgment was inspiring. Since doing that work, the client has said that they were able to move to a place of radical acceptance of their trauma, recognizing that it wasn't their fault and that their trauma doesn't define them. Releasing that shame has since helped them become a more compassionate, confident version of themselves.

Every client is different, so your process will be totally unique to your needs. Generally, my approach focuses on increasing self awareness, improving self compassion, and strengthening your sense of self to improve your ability to navigate life stressors and cope with mental health challenges. We will work together to compassionately identify maladaptive behaviors, explore root causes, and develop more effective ways to cope.

Our first session will focus on getting to know you and what brings you to therapy. With that typically comes sharing some information about your past, particularly how it relates to your present. You'll set the pace of our work together, so we can ease into it or dive right in. We will identify some goals that we can use to shape your journey, and make sure my style and expertise will fit what you are looking for.

Helping my clients be able to life a more fulfilling life is my biggest motivation. I have been so inspired by the willingness, resiliency, and humanity of every single person I've worked with. I'm so grateful to be a therapist - I really mean it when I say it's an honor to walk alongside my clients and witness their growth.

Highlights

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

I enter each session focused on meeting you where you are, with the goal of helping you arrive where you’d like to be. I am big on providing you with tangible skills and exercises that are tailored to help you meet your goals....yes, it's kind of like homework, but I promise I won't grade it.

Which evidence-based modalities do you specialize in, and how are they applied?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Tehrapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, Strength-Based Therapy, and Trauma Focused Therapy.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My main focus is creating a non-judgmental, comfortable environment where you feel safe to be your most vulnerable self. I believe one of my biggest strengths is showing up authentically so that you can feel safe to do so as well. I approach sessions with a balance of compassion, deep curiosity, and lots of humor to help us explore what brings you to therapy.
