Catalina Kraft
Catalina Kraft (she/her) is a Resident in Counseling and a National Certified Counselor based in Virginia. She has her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and her Doctorate in Counselor Education. Outside of her clinical work, Catalina enjoys crocheting, reading, and spending time with her two beloved cats.
A significant breakthrough that I had with a client was when I helped to normalize her experience. Oftentimes, clients can feel isolated in their experiences, especially ones that cause pain. However, I was able to provide the client with resources (e.g., books, support groups) to show her that she was not alone and that healing was possible. This gave the client hope that a better future was possible.
I aim to create an inclusive and safe space for my clients via culturally sensitive practices. You are the expert of your own life, and I will work with you via an integrative approach by using techniques tailored to your unique needs. I will work with you to co-create goals based on your needs, and I facilitate change and growth through empathy, engagement, collaboration, and connection.
The first session looks different than most sessions! This is a time for me to get to know the client more, so I tend to ask a lot of questions. My focus is to understand why the client is coming to therapy (e.g.,presenting problem, symptoms) AND who the client is as a person (e.g., background, interests). The first session also provides the client with the opportunity to get to know my personality and therapy style to determine if we are a good match.
I am motivated to be a therapist because I want to provide safe spaces and healing to diverse individuals. Bad therapy is real - I want to help decrease clients' negative experiences by filling the therapy world with inclusivity and empathy for all!
