Medication for Adults with ADHD

ADHD is treated by a combination of therapy and medication. For adults, medication can be the most effective thing in helping them manage their ADHD symptoms in a hectic world.

Is it worth getting ADHD medication as an adult?

As a kid, they called you “hyper” or “rowdy”. Or maybe they said you were a great student, but had a tendency to get lost in your own head. “Daydreamer” or “shy” became the labels that followed you around for years.

As an adult, you’re starting to think your tendencies to drift off in unrelated thoughts or inability to sit through an hour-long meeting might be more than just being a daydreamer.
Over 15 million adults have ADHD, which is not just a childhood disorder. Although ADHD will be present from childhood on, it can often go unnoticed for years. (This is especially true for girls and women.)

If you’re now dealing with the dreaded “ADHD tax”-- missed bills, unmet deadlines, dirty dishes that are starting to smell– you could benefit from taking ADHD medication. Under the guidance of a licensed psychiatrist or Nurse Practitioner in Toms River, ADHD medications are safe and a great way to improve your mental health.

Common Fears About ADHD Medication

Medication for ADHD has been approved for safe and effective use. Let’s address some common fears that may stop people from taking medication for their ADHD.

Fact: ADHD meds won’t change your personality.

ADHD meds that are the correct type and dosage for your body will not change your personality. If you experience a loss of emotions, joy, or interest in doing things, talk to your Toms River psychiatrist about changing medications. These are negative side effects that can (and should) be avoided.  When ADHD meds are balanced, you might feel clearer-headed, less scattered, and more able to get work done. It should never feel like the meds are forcing you to work or like you become a different person on them. If this happens, consult your psychiatrist.

Fact: ADHD meds aren’t chemically addicting.

There is little evidence that ADHD medications are chemically addictive. This means that most ADHD medications will not create the sort of addictive dependency that drugs like alcohol do. In fact, for many people with ADHD, taking medications has resulted in less risk of substance abuse.

Some people with ADHD may develop a behavioral addiction to medications. This happens when we crave the way something makes us feel, like scrolling social media. ADHD medications can bring a great deal of relief to people struggling with ADHD, and that relief may create a behavioral dependency on the medication. If you are concerned about this, talk to your psychiatrist. They can choose an ADHD medication that is less likely to cause behavioral addictions.

Fact: Most people experience less anxiety on ADHD meds!

Anxiety and ADHD are commonly comorbid- meaning they happen together. This is because ADHD symptoms are very anxiety-provoking. For example: time blindness causing perpetual lateness, inability to focus causing stress at work, and impulsivity in relationships leading to relationship strain. ADHD medications reduce the strain of ADHD symptoms, which reduces overall anxiety.

In some people, ADHD medications may cause an increase in heart rate and anxiety. If this happens, talk to your psychiatrist about switching meds or lowering your dose.

Fact: Your body will respond uniquely to ADHD medication.

ADHD medication can increase heart rate and blood pressure, which can put some people at an increased risk for heart issues later in life. However, this is very dependent on the individual. It’s important to monitor your heart rate when you first start taking ADHD medication. If you notice a large jump in heart rate, talk to your psychiatrist. They can find a medication that is easier on your body and doesn’t cause these problems.
Overall, when prescribed and taken correctly, ADHD meds shouldn't hurt your heart.

What Medication is Used for ADHD?

There are many types of ADHD medications. Most people know of stimulants like Adderall and Ritalin. While these are common, they are far from the only types. Nonstimulant medications like Straterra or Wellbutrin can be used if someone is afraid of potential heart issues or doesn't like the way stimulants feel. They’re also a good option for people who are struggling with anxiety or depression. Non-stimulant medications can include Vyvanse and Concerta.
