Medication for Panic Attacks

Rescue medication and other anxiety meds can help reduce the severity and frequency of panic attacks, so you don’t have to live in fear of another attack.

How to Manage Panic Attacks

Has this ever happened to you?

Your friends invite you to a new beachfront restaurant off Silver Bay. Just a night out, maybe some drinks after. It’ll be fun, they say!

You politely decline, your stomach already churning with anxiety. I just can’t risk it, you think. The last time you went to a new restaurant, you had a panic attack when the server asked you for your order before you were ready. Since then, you’ve had two other panic attacks in crowded spaces. You don’t think you’ll ever be able to go out downtown with your friends again.

If you relate at all to that story, you could benefit from taking medication for panic attacks. A combination of anxiety meds and rescue medication for when you’re feeling close to a panic attack can be prescribed by a psychiatrist. At Lifebulb, we have Toms River psychiatrists ready to help. All you have to do is call us or choose a psychiatrist from our therapist directory.

Medication for Panic Attack FAQ

There’s a lot of misinformation about medication for panic attacks and how panic attacks should be treated. Let’s look at some facts.

Rescue meds are fast-acting medications like Xanax that provide immediate relief. These meds are taken as needed to address immediate sources of panic. For example, you might take Xanax before boarding a plane to help with flying anxiety and prevent a panic attack mid-air. They are not meant to be taken regularly or in every situation. If you struggle with chronic panic attacks, rescue medications can give you your autonomy and freedom back. Working with a psychiatrist to treat the root cause of your anxiety will help you find healing in the long term.

Rescue medications like Xanax or Klonopin are considered short-term solutions. They are great at calming anxiety before it gets to a panic attack level and helping you manage highly triggering events. However, long-term solutions like therapy, general anxiety medication, and lifestyle changes are needed to fully treat panic attacks and panic disorder.

In Toms River, Lifebulb employs both in-house psychiatrists and therapists, so they can communicate with each other and provide holistic treatment that offers both short-term relief and long-term healing.

SSRIs for anxiety, like Zoloft or Lexapro, are not addictive or habit-forming. (Although you should never quit them cold-turkey and always talk to your psychiatrist before changing doses.) These are great options for addressing general, chronic anxiety. To treat the heightened periods of distress in panic attacks, you might be prescribed rescue medications like Xanax. These medications work quickly but can be addictive and habit-forming. To prevent that, your psychiatrist will monitor your dose and how frequently you take these medications. They’ll also develop a strong treatment plan to work on the root of your panic. The goal is to prevent future panic attacks so that rescue meds are not needed.

Stabilization Timeline

How long will it take to feel better after taking medication for panic attacks? Rescue medications take 30 to 60 minutes to work and wear off in a few hours. SSRIs and other long-term medications will take a few weeks. Most treatment plans estimate 3-6 months to start seeing real, sustainable change.
