About Nicholas Koumarianos

I am a licensed clinical therapist who specializes in treating Obsessive‑Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and related conditions. My work is grounded in evidence‑based, with a strong focus on Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I help people reduce compulsions, navigate uncertainty with greater confidence, and reclaim the parts of life that OCD and Anxiety has disrupted.

I hold advanced graduate training in psychology, including a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling and a Ph.D. in Psychology, reflecting my deep commitment to understanding the science of OCD, anxiety, and severe mental health conditions.

FAQs

  • The Challenge: A client came to me completely paralyzed by severe Harm OCD and "just right" perfectionism. They were spending 4 to 5 hours a day trapped in mental rumination and physical checking compulsions. It had cost them their job, strained their relationships, and left them feeling deeply ashamed and isolated.
  • The Intervention: Using a collaborative, highly structured approach, we implemented Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). We began with low-level triggers, slowly building their tolerance to uncertainty without letting them engage in compulsions. We paired this with CBT to gently challenge the core belief that an intrusive thought equals an action or a reflection of their true character.
  • The Breakthrough: The watershed moment occurred when the client successfully completed a high-level, real-world exposure task without engaging in a single safety behavior. For the first time in years, the spike of anxiety came—and then it naturally dissolved on its own.
  • The Outcome: The client realized that their thoughts held no power over them. They left therapy not just with reduced symptoms, but completely transformed. They reclaimed their independence, returned to work, and most importantly, stepped back into their life feeling empowered and confident.

Clients can generally expect a semi-structured, collaborative, and supportive counseling journey that moves seamlessly from the initial session to ongoing exploration and eventual goal achievement.

The first session is focused entirely on getting to know each other in a safe, non-judgmental space where the client can feel comfortable, relaxed, and completely free of stress or worries.

My motivation to be a therapist comes from the privilege of hearing people's unique stories, empathizing deeply with their trauma and life experiences, and helping them find lasting peace. I am driven by a passion for guiding individuals through their healing journeys, helping them build the resilience to get comfortable with being uncomfortable as they grow.
