Hi there, I'm Ally Hickey. I am a licensed professional counselor with several years of experience working in clinical psychology settings, such as a inpatient psychiatric unit, a forensic CRR, a partial hospital for children and teens, general outpatient, and a drug and alcohol rehab facility. I help people who are easily overwhelmed to learn distress tolerance techniques and stress management skills. Together, we can strategize about what to do to help you to manage your emotions. I also integrate mindfulness, yoga and art to help you develop a stronger relationship with yourself. Whether you're dealing with overwhelming relationship issues or cycles of anxiety and depression, I'm here to help. Seeking therapy can feel scary but you're making the right choice. You deserve a safe space to heal and grow. In our sessions together, I'll meet you with compassion and evidence-based techniques so you can overcome the hang-ups and habits holding you back. Let's work together!
When I started working with a client at a forensic CRR, he demonstrated selective mutism and barely spoke more than one word at a time. By the time he was graduating for the program, he was able to write and recite a poem to the entire company of around 700 people.
Though every person’s situation is unique, I generally approach the counseling process from a CBT and DBT framework. I try to help connect your thoughts, feelings and behaviors as well as the ABCs (antecedent, behavior, consequence) of your choices to help you have a better sense of self-awareness.
My first session is a time to build rapport and get to know the client. It is important to me that the client feels comfortable talking to me about whatever is on their mind, so this first session is essential for building trust. It isn’t just a time for demographic gathering. It’s important that my clients understand that counseling is a process that can work for them, so we’ll spend time discussing what is important to them and what they want to work on.
I have been interested in the mind and how it works ever since I was a child. I chose my career officially in junior year of high school and I have never turned back. I am the type of person who has always lent a hand to those in need and find purpose in helping others. Through it all, I've learned to love seeing people discover their true potential and succeed.
