Hello there! My name is Jamie Jackson. I am currently a Resident in Counseling. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University (Go Mountaineers!!) in Multidisciplinary Studies focusing on Sociology, Human Services, and Disability Studies. In May of 2021 I graduated from Eastern Mennonite University with a Masters in Counseling and a Masters in Interdisciplinary Studies with a focus on Conflict Transformation and Organizational Leadership. I have served the community working with individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities since 2015. I also work with veterans in the community linking them with resources for mental health. It is my belief that cultivating a space that allows and encourages us to be our true self leads to personal growth, transformation and healing. With this belief, it is important to meet clients where they are as they are. Together we walk on the journey of self-discovery. I work with individuals from all walks of life and truly believe that at various times in our life we can all benefit from the work done within the counseling space. In my free time, I can be found spending time with my family, attending sporting events, or baking in the kitchen. I am excited to embark on this journey with you.
A breakthrough with a client that I had been working with was a middle-aged female who had been in a long-term abusive marriage who currently divorced. The client was starting to explore dating and establishing relationships with healthy boundaries. While we spoke often about expressing her needs, she was allowing them to be overlooked. Though continual discussion about her self-worth and acceptance that boundaries are in place to protect individuals she was able to communicate that and name those to her partner. Together we worked on holding space to name both healthy and negative patterns as well as develop her self-confidence.
Our counseling process will be driven by you. I believe that clients are able to get to a place where they can understand and know what they need with support and compassion. If a client may feel they would benefit from structure, I am able to provide that as well. My hope is that my clients feel a sense of collaboration and support from the counseling environment that they will be able to develop a sense of autonomy.
The first session will be steeped in building rapport and establishing the therapeutic relationship. We will need to go through a series of background related questions that will provide me with a broad understanding of the reason you are seeking services. This session will feel slightly more structured than our typical sessions. I will also touch on potential goals or outcomes you wish to work towards.
It is being welcomed into another person's journey and being able to walk alongside of them that motivates me in my own journey as a therapist. Creating a space where clients are able to speak on their own lived experiences when they possibly have not been able to do that in the past. I continue to show up for my clients because I have been on the receiving end as a client and have felt the support and compassion that has allowed me to develop my own sense of self.
