I had a woman with bipolar medicine, who had been a nurse, but was on disability. She was taking ten different medications, but still was impaired. With careful analysis, I was able to get her down to one medication. She was able to come off of disability and return to work.
I will carefully listen for unrealistic thinking and challenge it (for example, I did poorly on a project and I am a failure). I will look for patterns of the same type of thinking and be able to label the pattern. We will explore the genesis of the thinking, understand why it may have been accurate at some point, but is no longer realistic. Then we will work together to correct these cognitive distortions and the emotions associated with them.
During the first session, I will take a comprehensive history. I want to know all the symptoms that are being experienced, the onset, what provoked them and what has or has not worked to adapt. I want to know al treatment interventions that have been used, those successful and those not successful. I want to know much about how you grew up, your relationship with your parents, siblings and peers and how this impacted your academic and work experiences. I also want to know about your current family and children. In particular, I want to know what you perceive to be your assets and areas that need improvement.
I feel a need to intrinsically understand all the aspects that make each individual a unique culture. This has always intrigued me and creates a special working relationship with other people those others rarely have the opportunity to experience. I enjoy vicarious excitement over the improvements my patients make and I work hard to have these improvements happen often. Even small steps are a reason for celebration.
Highlights
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
After a session, the patient should expect that I have an in-depth understanding of their mental, physical and social wellbeing and what are the unique factors about them as a person. A detailed explanation of the working diagnosis is provided and possible recommendations are discussed including benefits, risks and side effect. Dr. Wood is especially respectful of patient autonomy letting patients decide treatment options that will best fit with their personal circumstance.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing & Solution-Focused Therapy.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
My major strength is my in-depth knowledge of neuroreceptors, how they create mental distress and what medications can help to address the distress. In addition the patient will understand the interplay between genetics, life events and stressors in the presentation of their illness. A strong focus will be on understanding how individuals develop maladaptive thinking that then creates or worsens underlying emotional states.
