About Me

My name is Zayna and I'm an Arkansas native living in New Jersey. I have been an outpatient counselor for 9 years, with a specialty in trauma. I received my Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from Southern AR University. I treat a variety of diagnoses, but my passion lies in trauma based treatment. I have been trained and/or certified in 3 different trauma techniques, including EMDR. I like to approach therapy from a standpoint of empowering my clients to become the master of their own emotions. I do my best to tailor my methods to those that best suit my clients on an individual level, as no two people are the same. I'm married with my first child on the way. I love international travel, reading, and board/card games.

FAQs

I once worked with a client who had been misdiagnosed and was not receiving the appropriate type of care. I was able to successfully identify the correct diagnosis, which led to the client also getting the appropriate medication treatment as well. I also worked with this client on reprocessing a lot of repressed traumatic events, leading her to better manage family relationships and emotional reactions to stressors. She had been thinking about dropping out of college due to being unable to manage symptoms of depression but was able to continue with ongoing support in therapy.

I use a client-centric approach to counseling, meaning that how we utilize our session together is completely up to the client. I like to offer opportunities for a client to discuss what’s most important to them at the moment and we work together to process emotions and identify healthy coping skills. If a client expresses a desire to do trauma-based work, I use techniques from evidenced-based treatments to assist the client with reprocessing traumatic events and lowering their level of disturbance to triggers.

In the first session we discuss the therapeutic process and your rights as a client. While there is a bit of information gathering required during this session, I also like to utilize that time to discuss current issues/symptoms and your reason for seeking counseling. We can use this time to get to know each other and determine if we are a good fit for a productive therapeutic relationship.

I initially became interested in counseling while working with children in foster care. I wanted to help and make a difference, but was limited in my role at that time. This desire prompted me to get my Masters degree in counseling. Since then, my motivation remains much the same. I’ve worked with clients that have been through unspeakable traumatic events, and my greatest desire is to help them overcome and move on to live a happy and productive life.

Highlights

What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?

Typical sessions involve discussing current issues and how they are impacting your level of functioning as we work together to identify healthy ways of managing emotions. I will assist you in processing feelings and identifying underlying issues, which can often stem from past experiences. If a trauma history is present, I will help you decrease emotional disturbances to past events by reprocessing traumatic memories in a safe and caring environment. My hope and goal is that all clients leave their sessions feeling that they’ve been heard and understood and with an increased ability to self-regulate their emotions.

What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?

I utilize evidence-based treatment methods, such as cognitive-behavioral and solution-focused therapies. While I work with a variety of diagnoses, my passion lies in treating PTSD and trauma based issues. I have been trained in EMDR, TF-CBT, and flash technique, and use these methods frequently with positive results. I also like to incorporate attachment-based and internal family system methods.

Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.

I have worked with ages 5 and up in a variety of settings, including inpatient and outpatient settings. I’ve worked as part of a team that assessed clients in crisis and emergency situations, so I’m well informed in safety planning and/or identifying need for higher levels of care. I have 9 years of experience working with clients struggling with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, ADHD, psychosis, and mood disorders. My greatest strength however, lies in the treatment of trauma based issues. I have advanced training in three different types of trauma treatment, one of which is specifically tailored for children/teens.
