About Me

Hi! My name is Joshua Schaap. Most people just call me Josh, but I'm fine with either. In case, you're wondering how to pronounce my last name try saying "Skopp". Nevertheless, I've developed the ability to answer to anything remotely close to it. Some fun/interesting facts about me are that I've lived in 5 different states, I love a good true-crime podcast, and have a rescue pup named Lilo. Some helpful things to know about me are that I'm a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Virginia and I've worked in a variety of mental health settings prior to joining the team at Lifebulb. These include psychiatric inpatient, residential recovery, and outpatient. I've come away from each of these experiences with a greater understanding of mental health and a deeper respect for the people I've helped along the way. As a therapist with Lifebulb, I look forward to using the knowledge gained from these experiences to foster positive/lasting change and improved quality of life for you from the work we'll do in therapy.

FAQs

I was fortunate enough to work with a single mother who struggled with perfectionism especially when parenting her 2 young sons. Her biggest breakthrough occurred when she realized how her perfectionism had helped her survive as a child living in an abusive home, but how it was now limiting her ability to grow into an empowered adult. This breakthrough led to a positive change in how she framed her abilities and self-worth. From that point onward, she was able to gradually make decisions more confidently and set realistic expectations for herself and her boys.

The counseling process will be highly collaborative and go at a speed that works for you. It is my intent to foster conversations that help empower you to make the changes you want while also providing you with validation and feedback so that those changes are realistic and lasting.

In the first session, I'll focus on getting to know you and what brings you to therapy. You can share whatever you feel comfortable sharing. Whether it is your first time talking to a counselor or you've been in counseling for years, my desire is that you will come away from our first meeting feeling a sense of relief and renewed hope that things really can get better.

My motivation is to see each of my client's gain the skills and insights needed to experience lasting change, personal empowerment, and improved quality of life.
