Hi there, I'm Tatyana Shields. I believe that therapy is a private space where you can put aside the fear of judgment and pick up tools for personal growth to progress toward balance and peace. I completed my undergraduate studies at State University of New York at Potsdam and received my Master of Social Work degree from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. I have worked in higher education as a staff therapist in New York and specialize in child and adolescent psychotherapy, parent education and skill-building, and experiences of trauma and PTSD. I offer support and guidance to individuals and families as they undertake major life changes.
I once worked with a client for about 2 years who struggled enormously with boundary setting and toxic interpersonal relationships. Through our work together, they were able to establish a healthier relationship with themselves and actively set boundaries to improve their interpersonal relationship and the quality of significant relationships with immediate family and close friends.
Though every person’s situation is unique, I generally approach the counseling process from a collaborative standpoint and use a psychodynamic framework to help my clients first understand their underlying issues resulting in their current symptoms and by working together to be accountable for implementing the necessary skills to improve their overall quality of life.
During the initial session, the goal is to provide a safe space for the patient to identify what encouraged them to seek services while helping alleviate any anxiety about moving forward. This is an opportunity for the patient to also identify whether they feel we are good fit as I believe in order to move forward together, a rapport is necessary and your comfort and needs come first.
I am someone who truly believes that my career chose me. I have always looked forward to supporting others whether it was from a distance or directly. I believe that therapy is a private space where you can put aside the fear of judgement and pick up tools for personal growth & progress toward balance & peace.
What can clients expect to take away from sessions with you?
My goal is to provide therapy that is catered to the individual and collaborative. Therapy is most effective as a collaborative effort in which both of us enter with an expertise, mine as a compassionate therapist and yours as the expert on you and your needs. My clients arrive at therapy seeking to cope with past and present experiences of trauma, family dysfunction, depression and anxiety, and systems that diminish mental health and wellness.
What treatment methods and tools do you utilize?
My areas of professional interest include intergenerational trauma, anxiety/depression, neurodevelopmental disorders, relationships, marginalized populations with a focus on collaborative and integrated care. As the expert in YOU, we will work together to establish meaningful goals, to get in motion with a renewed sense of motivation & to heal emotional wounds. My therapeutic style integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Narrative Therapy and Solution-Focused Therapy and your treatment plan will be individualized and tailored to fit your specific needs.
Explain to clients what areas you feel are your biggest strengths.
I have worked with toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric populations in individual therapy, group settings and performed neurological testing and assessments. I have a passion for working with individuals who face sexuality and identify concerns and have worked with clients with a wide range of concerns including depression, anxiety, social anxiety, mood disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders. While I do work in a general way with all ages and a variety of groups, my focus population’s are the LGBTQA population and child and adolescent and geriatric population.
